My GetResponse Pros and Cons

I have personally used this marketing software for years and it’s one of the most essential tools that I always stick with, partly because of its simplicity and good pricing structure. Here are my pros and cons of GetResponse:

ProsCons
Robust, all-in-one eCommerce and email marketing platform Some automations require higher-tier plans
Industry-leading conversion funnel featuresTemplates can be kind of pedestrian
Easy to useNot the “latest” marketing tool
Excellent automation features
Excellent integrations with social media and eCommerce platforms
Friendly and accessible customer service
Affordable

What is GetResponse Used For?

Originally, GetResponse was designed to be an e-newsletter company. As it turns out, they had a whole lot more ambition than that and it paid off. Now, GetResponse is also geared towards e-commerce, and online marketing. Launched in 1998, GetResponse has grown into probably one of the most potent online marketing software choices available.

GetResponse is today a do-it-all email marketing platform with a ton of features. In terms of the integrations I mentioned, we’re talking about analytics and other software to the tune of around 180 additional integrations, including the following:

  • Social media
  • Payment systems
  • Multiple eCommerce platforms
  • Conversion software
  • Landing pages
  • Pop-up builders
  • Customer Relationship Management

Another plus for GetResponse is that it’s not going to blow a hole in your finances. You won’t have to sell one of your kidneys on the black market to afford all of the features GetResponse brings to the table.

The GetReponse pricing is based on a scaling structure, meaning that you pay for what you need with the price increase based on the number of subscribers/contacts. The best part is that GetResponse lets you get started for free and you won’t pay a dime until you reach over 500 subscribers.

That makes GetResponse about as beginner-friendly as it gets. You have the time to learn your way around the software and build your subscriber base without having to worry about paying a monthly or annual subscription for the service.

Some of the most important features that come with GetResponse include email autoresponders, automated emails, webinars (becoming extremely popular), landing pages, newsletters, and sign-up/sales funnels.

GetResponse is not for the meek at heart. You can’t cancel your plan if you decide to go all in on the annual plan (not a problem if you choose the monthly!). So, if you are not sure how far you want to take your project or in what direction, you may want to choose a monthly plan.

Also, if you are really into complex and intuitive landing pages, GetResponse’s versions are a little on the old-school side, but on the other hand user-friendly and easy to get started with.

What I Like About GetResponse

GetResponse eases you into the world of email marketing without extracting a pound of flesh. It provides you with all of your most important email marketing tools while holding back some of the more complicated and intuitive features for access as your project grows.

GetResponse is also frequently updating and upgrading, so there is always something new coming down the pike.

For this article, I reached out to GetResponse to hear what their plan for the next few years looks like, and John LoBrutto from GetResponse told me:

GetResponse will be enhancing our marketing automation platform and Ecommerce tools over the next few years. Development will focus on the needs of Marketing professionals and building integration with new partners.

One of its key features is the autoresponder function as it’s one of the most robust and streamlined autoresponders out there.

Once you create a free account, you can start designing your own email templates with plenty of variety to choose from. GetResponse has over 120 email templates to choose from so you can both be creative and find an aesthetic that suits your business needs and personal likes.

Personally, I like to write simple emails with a blank template from scratch, so it looks like the sender is a close friend or similar, and not just another business newsletter.

Free Plan

When it comes to the GetResponse pros and cons, as I mentioned above, this tool is free to sign up for and it allows you a good degree of flexibility until you generate over 500 subscribers. From there, you have the option of tiered plans that are entirely based on your subscription numbers and your personal preference.

You will miss out on some of the finer features in the GetResponse package until you activate the more premium tiers. However, GetResponse has neatly tailored these various tiers so that you don’t need those features as much until you accrue the number of subscribers that necessitates it.

Also, you can upgrade your plan to access more features anytime should you prefer to. Below is a short video from GetResponse about their Free plan:

Email Marketing and Marketing Automation

The automation level with email marketing in GetResponse is incredible. As robust as the email marketing feature is, it never makes you feel overwhelmed. Everything is reasonably understandable and you will quickly learn how everything works.

In the Editor options, you can enhance your email designs with video, images, social media links, and HTML customizations, assuming you have a basic knowledge of HTML. GetResponse’s email automation is actionable, meaning that the consumer commits to action and the email response is automatically activated.

For instance, if someone adds themselves to your contact list from a landing page or so, you can set it up so that a welcome email with an offer is generated and sent. It can then be automatically followed up with another email, along with a discount offer if they haven’t picked up the initial offer within a week. It takes a lot of the necessary follow-up off of your shoulders.

If a user subscribes to a list, alters their contact preferences, has a birthday, commits to a transaction, or takes any number of actions, the autoresponder feature responds according to how you have set it up. This is the beauty of email marketing with automation on top.

Currently, if you want access to GetResponse’s autoresponder feature, you’ll need the Email Marketing plan (the Free plan does not offer the autoresponder).

However, if you want to be able to use marketing automation features, as well as webinars and sales funnels, etc., you’ll need to upgrade to the Marketing Automation plan.

If you’re just starting, the Free plan or the Email Marketing plan will probably be enough for you at this time – very suitable for any online side hustle or start-up.

ECommerce Marketing

There is a good deal of automation in this plan as well. Some of it revolves around sending customers a simple notification while some are based on various automated responses and actions.

Here are a few very useful features that are beneficial for eCommerce businesses:

  • Automated retention services
  • Sale promotions
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Alerts when the online cart is left sitting there
  • Notifications after a purchase is made

This helps you keep track of your consumers from the very beginning to the end of their transaction and allows you an opportunity to present a follow-up if a customer doesn’t like a product or abandons a cart full of items in your online store.

Plus, GetResponse integrates seamlessly with a number of online eCommerce platforms such as Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, PrestaShop, and, according to themselves, more are on the way. Thus, you can reach out to your customer throughout each one of these platforms as well.

In fact, when I was in touch with GetResponse for this article, I also asked what features around Ecommerce Marketing they are most excited about at this moment, and John LoBrutto said:

For our Ecommerce release, we are most proud of the one click integration with Shopify, Magento, Presta Shop and Woo Commerce. Also, our new features of promo code integration, automated recommendation for selling and conversion popups.

GetResponse provides you with a full breakdown of their “deliverability” rates, so if you have a customer that’s on the fence about something, you can be sure that your automated follow-up emails will go through or GetResponse will let you know why not.

GetResponse also offers automated emails based on purchase follow-ups as well as tracking all of your sales. As mentioned above, abandoned carts trigger email campaigns to lure customers back to your platform and product (invaluable feature!).

GetResponse also has one of the most effective and robust sales funnel software features available in the industry. That’s despite the fact that their sales funnel software is a fairly recent addition to their overall package.

With GetResponse, there are plenty of eCommerce tools to take advantage of as well, some of which we have glossed over above (there is a lot more to cover with GetResponse attempting to be an all-in-one machine, rather successfully).

Here are some additional benefits of using the Ecommerce Marketing plan:

  • Promotion Codes: Who doesn’t like to use promotion codes? They can be added or removed from your email design templates with the drag and drop feature in the email builder.
  • History-Based Product Recommendations: Show the customer what they want to see, based on their shopping history.
  • Advanced Segmentation: Using analytical software tools that track everything the customer does, GetResponse allows you to build targeted campaign emails.

GetResponse Pricing Plans

As I mentioned above, a beginner jumping on board with GetResponse for the first time can take advantage of a good portion of the available features on GetResponse at zero cost. At least, that’s true until you exceed 500 subscribers.

Free PlanEmail MarketingMarketing AutomationeCommerce Marketing
$0 per month (Up to 500 Subscribers)$19 per month (1,000+ Subscribers)$59 per month (1,000+ Subscribers)$119 per month (1,000+ Subscribers)

The free account is designed to help you get started. However, it won’t take you all the way through your entire foray into eCommerce. You will gain access to GetResponse’s website builder, can send out unlimited newsletters, and generate up to 500 contacts.

This includes all of the templates and website builder tools that the premium tiers have to offer. You are free to tailor your site and your emails how you see fit.

Once you hit 1,000 subscribers, you will need to upgrade to the Email Marketing tier, which is only $19 per month ($15 for 12 months or $13 for 24 months). This second tier is designed for a small company or up-and-coming entrepreneur, so if you are the lone head honcho of your enterprise, it will serve you adequately.

You will have access to as many landing pages as you want, with the continued convenience of the website builder as well. Moving into this tier will introduce you to some minor segmentation features for the first time, along with setting schedules for your emails, and eCommerce integrations.

The final two tiers are more focused tiers, with Marketing Automation focusing on email marketing and the eCommerce Marketing tier focused more on the purely eCommerce side.

Endnote on the GetResponse Pros and Cons

GetResponse tries to do a bit of everything and the company is surprisingly successful. It is reasonably priced, especially considering the competition, but does require higher subscription tiers to access some of its best features.

If you want to integrate all of your eCommerce and email marketing into one, large, robust, yet simple-to-use platform, GetResponse should be your number one choice, if not high on your list of options.

I hope you found my GetResponse pros and cons article useful – I decided to create this GetResponse review 2023 since it is one of a very select few tools that I continue to use (and love) year after year in my own email marketing.

For me personally, it is the simplicity, functionality, and modest pricing structure that got me hooked.

I also have to give praise to their friendly and accessible customer service team that is always ready to assist, whenever I bump into an obstacle and need help. Like many of the bigger internet-based companies, they offer a 24/7 live chat, but no phone support.

So, don’t be afraid to ask for their help when you are wondering how to use GetResponse or just getting started using their tools! (Plus, there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube).
